The Jack Newton Radio by Jon Lawrence (RRP £6.99) is a poignant and compelling novel that offers a thoughtful meditation on love and loss.
Spirited 70-something Anwyn Jones relocates to her childhood home of St David’s in Wales after the death of her husband and soul mate, Michael. Their relationship had been concentrated to the exclusion of all others and they had lived separated from the modern world. Their only indulgence, besides reading, was to listen to the poetry shows on the radio.
Anywn finds an old radio in her new home, a tiny cottage overlooking the sea and discovers a local poetry programme featuring the work of mysterious poet Jack Newton. Soon she is tuning in every evening, finding solace in his writing.
As Anwyn struggles with her grief, she begins to notice problems with her memory and fears she may be developing dementia. She is terrified that she might lose the only thing of any value to her: the memory of her husband. After a visit to the surgery following an injury caused by her failing memory, Anwyn strikes up an unlikely friendship with a fractured family coming to terms with their own issues, including infidelity and the violent bullying of their gentle, nature-loving son, Peter.
Yet within sight of the guiding light of the lighthouse, new bonds are made, souls are reconnected and hope is found amidst the darkness.
